With an endearing appearance and mischievous character, your Shar Pei puppy holds within them two types of character: that of the imposing and energetic defence dog and that of a gentle and charming dog. Adapt their training so that they adjust to the rules of your house and your life, and pay special attention to looking after their skin.
Shar Peis have infinite patience with children, as long as they have grown up beside them since the puppy stage. Put up with their antics and do not complain or appear annoyed even when they go overboard.
A LOVER OF THE GOOD LIFE
Shar Peis love the comfort of the inside of the home. They also know how to behave: they are not nervous dogs and nor do they tend to damage the furniture. Shar Peis feel devoted to their family.
So if you are a part of it, they will idolise you and obediently respect your instructions. But they will only be like that with you; people that they do not know will find it hard to gain the dog’s trust.
strong>PLACATE THEIR DESIRE TO FIGHT
When a Shar Pei crosses paths with another dog, it is quite likely that their fighting instinct will surface and you will have to intervene.
DELICATE SKIN
The Shar Pei’s skin is full of folds and wrinkles and this tends to be their weak point: they are very susceptible to dermatitis due to the excess of a very common parasite on dogs’ skin.
This is a very delicate breed, because as well as skin problems they are highly predisposed to suffer from hereditary diseases such as:
Hypothyroidism
Amyloidosis
Familial Shar Pei fever
Hip dysplasia
Gastric torsion
Dislocation of the kneecap
Certainly, you must be very mindful and periodically consult your vet.
