What should you do if your dog gets lost?

You have no idea how it happened, but your best friend has got lost and the only thing you can think about is how to get them back. The best thing, in such cases, is to be prepared and have a plan.

IDENTIFIED ANIMAL

First of all, any puppy over three months old should be identified with a microchip. The device is implanted under the skin, in a painless way and permanently, and it identifies the dog with a unique number for their whole life, which in turn is linked to data about their human family. A vet should deal with implanting the microchip and managing it.

Remember that if you move house or change your telephone number, you should advise your province’s Identification of Pet Animals Archive so that they can update the database and get in touch with you if necessary.

1

Notify their loss to your province’s Identification of Pet Animals Archive.

2

Notify the local police or the local authorities, as well as the municipal animal collection centre or, failing this, your municipal Animal Protection Society.

3

Visit vets in the area, leaving a note with the description or a photograph of your dog and their microchip number, because it is very often the case that if someone finds them in the street, they will take them to a vets.

4

Publish the loss of your dog on your social media and on websites that provide news about the loss and rescue of pets in the area where you live.

THE RETURN HOME!

At last you get the call from the Identification Archive! Someone has found your dog, picked them up and checked their identity. They will tell you where you can find them to take them back home. Bear in mind that in some cases you will have to take care of any accommodation and maintenance costs that may have been incurred when you pick them up.

Getting an identity microchip implanted in your dog is the best system for getting them back if they get lost and also to prove the family that they belong to, should they be stolen or if anyone questions their return.
